"Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be. Just a dream and the wind to carry me and soon I will be free..." Singer-Songwriter Christopher Cross 1979 Grammy winner
What is your favorite escape?? I hope you have places distant and in your own back yard where you can disappear.
My town became so overloaded with political yard signs that I had to map out a different route to the market! A drive to the grocery store can be an enjoyable outing or stressful experience. It was easy to find a route with beautiful homes, trees and landscapes, past parks and conservation land, so each trip to the market became a relaxing excursion.
Plan days off, coffee breaks and me time throughout your days and weeks. Regrouping is essential to remaining fresh and effective in body, mind and spirit. Recovery days are essential to fitness routines. Mental breaks allow solutions to flow. Our spirit needs to daydream.
One interesting educational study from years ago sought to unearth the prevalent attributes of healthy and intelligent children. The research concluded that the most common attribute of these children was that they periodically spent time just staring out the window!!!!! Resting the mind and the body is so important to well being and success it is instinctual!
Uncover the places in your home, your town, your backyard or even your mind, which energize and relax. Find peace in your everyday environment. Plan longer escapes, as well. Schedule time for a day on a sailboat, an afternoon fishing, a long hike in the woods, or a day of vegging around the house.
Plan vacations and personal days for a year ahead. Have fun anticipating these escapes from the humdrum and the stressful. Find your sanctuaries. Exciting vacations can recharge, too. It all depends on what you need at any given time. An adventure outing, trip to an exotic locale or African safari might be the needed escape, but be sure you have at least some moments of total letting go on your sojourn. Bring your baseline stress level way way down. Get comfortable.
Learn to meditate, chill out, do yoga, get massages and manicures. Have a spa day. I always aspired to be like James Bond. Totally cool in the most stressful of circumstances. I am not there. It takes so much training and determination for me to hold that calm. Even Bond had his vacations. No matter how low key you are, a day away is a day which recharges your batteries, however they need to be recharged.
Take the day off. Put away the phone. Have fun. Swing in a hammock. Go shopping. Escape to your workshop. Take a ride in the country. Whatever you choose, it must NOT be work or self improvement. It must be something you just feel like doing for no special reason at all. Something is calling you, there is an itch or a yearning... what is it?...what are you waiting for.?.. Take note and go do it.
