It's here!!!!
The merry month of May.
In May spring picks up steam. It is a good month to play and to prepare for summer fun.
Get out your bike and your kayak. Clean up your gardening tools. Take some rides in the country. Hike in nearby nature sanctuaries. Arnold Arboretum in the suburbs of Boston is a fabulous place for walks this time of year. I'm sure every city has an Arboretum, Gardens, Parks and other beautiful places to visit which are bursting with Springtime energy. Check out Lilac Sunday at the Arboretum on May 8th.
Garden nurseries are fun to visit, too. Everything is lush, fresh and inspiring now. Take a country ride and stop at an old fashion roadside stand. You may find a great summer farmstand in the process. Look for those that grow seasonal produce with little pesticide used. Asparagus, chives, spinach, lettuce and other crops are already available. Buy some and use them in your meals. Search the internet and your cookbooks for good recipes. Check out the asparagus soup recipe on this blog. Delicious, easy and creamy.
Every spring my children used to pick a tree to observe. Each morning as they bound out the backdoor for school, I encouraged them to watch the changes rapidly unfolding . These rapid changes are a miracle before your eyes. Don't take this awakening for granted. Observe it more closely than you usually do. Appreciate the life around you blooming.
May is also a good time to focus on being summer ready by Memorial Day Weekend. Dejunk and clear old stuff!! Sheets, towels, clothes, beach towels, garden implements, grills, junk in the shed. Then have fun replacing what you need for a relaxed, adventurous summer. Make a list. Car, grill, outdoor furniture, plants, beach towels, bird feeders- repair or replace. Create a beautiful backdrop for summer fun. Spring cleaning happens automatically when you approach it this way. Get some help if you can afford it. Hire an industrious teenager. An outdoor cleanup and once a season house cleaning by professionals gives a good boost.
Use May as a kickoff for new beginnings. Establish routines that nourish and delight you. Find balance. Create peace. Cultivate beauty. The energy of the season supports these cleanups and fresh starts. Feel the gentle breezes. Light a cozy fire or outdoor pit on the cool evenings. Look up at the stars. May only comes once a year. It is a good time to create anew.
